Jack Lowden

Stewart Christie • Jul 27, 2017

Jack Lowden, one of Scotland's greatest contemporary talents who has recently starred in the closing film of the Edinburgh Film Festival, England is Mine, as well as Christopher Nolan's epic blockbuster, Dunkirk, spent the afternoon with us at Stewart Christie talking all things Morrissey, theatre, Nolan and Spitfires. From Essex to Oxton to London, Jack has embraced his profession both on stage and screen in a massive variety of roles. Read on for a little insider of his experience pursuing a rather exciting career.

Name: Jack Lowden
Profession: Actor

Which of your early roles helped you learn the most, and who did you learn most from in any of your roles?

I learnt the most in my first big job, Black Watch for the National Theatre of Scotland, and it's still my favourite job. It was a play I saw when I was fifteen. I learnt to feel comfortable on stage, and from that point on, stage was where I felt most comfortable in life.

In Tommy's Honour you played Tom Morris the younger, you seemed to be a natural with a golf club. Was that some natural talent for the sport or good acting?

No I hadn't really played before, but I was given the R&A's club pro Jim Farmer-couldn't have asked for anyone better, and Jim got me from hitting 1 in 20 sweetly to 1 in 3. He's where the buck stops.

"England is Mine" is the unauthorised biopic of the young and ambitious Steven Patrick Morrissey which premiered at the EIFF. Did you get to meet Morrissey before filming or was the character developed under the direction of Mark Gill?

No I haven't met him. I would love to though. Everything was from the script and his music for me. The guy's hesitation, physicality, humour, etc... it was all there for me, and up to me and Mark how much we pushed each one. I loved doing it. I love seeing what I can get away with...

This summer's highly acclaimed film, Dunkirk is heralded as one of the modern epic's, it must have been quite something to have been part of, for reasons such as Director Christopher Nolan using extras instead of CGI for the troops on the beaches.

Being part of Dunkirk was special for many reasons, Chris being the main one, along with ACTUAL SPITFIRES. But also, the young cast was another plus for me, some complete unknowns, they were all a great laugh, and completely fearless.

If you could have picked your own squadron of actors to star alongside with in a WW2 drama, who would they be? Imagine a new take of the dirty Dozen meets Kelly's Heros..Tom Hardy is a given..

Lesley Manville, Simon Willaims, James McArdle, Katherine Pearce & Dwayne Johnson.

"My favourite thing about the beautiful suit is, even though it's the best tailored gear, it feels like a tracksuit.
I could lounge and lounge in it all day."

— The Art of Tweed — Tweed is one of Scotland's great gifts to the world. Woven into every strand of this most authentic and rugged of cloths is an extraordinary heritage of innovation and creativity. The Art of Tweed explores the landscapes, textures and patterns of this glorious fabric. From the rolling hills of Scotland's country estates to the rhythmic clatter of looms in our last-surviving mills. From artisan weavers on the Isle of Harris to the high fashion of international catwalks and urban designers reimagining tweed for the streets. Here is a story of romance, nostalgia, sustainability and style - of an effortlessly versatile cloth and its unique place in our lives. Whether fashioned into a flat cap or tailored into a cape, the story of tweed is a story to be shared. Having explored Scotland's boldest fabric in The Secret Life of Tartan, Vixy shares here her love of tweed, mixing her streetstyle background with traditional techniques to give a cutting-edge twist to old ways. Tweed has had its share of ups and downs, but remains steadfast as the countryside's cloth of choice hard-working, purposeful and with an understated style of its own.
