BESPOKE TAILORING

Bespoke Tailoring

At Stewart Christie & Co. we are often asked, what is Bespoke?

In classical tailoring terms, bespoke denotes a hand tailored piece that is measured, cut and sewn to the specific requirements of the customer.

The pattern is made exclusively for that customer and bespoke ought not to be confused with “made to measure” items – where a block pattern is adjusted to take into account a customer’s specific needs.

However, in addition to this technical definition we would like to add that to our team at our tailoring workshop in Edinburgh, Scotland – bespoke also denotes further qualities: 'unique’, ‘individual’, ‘hand crafted’, ‘thoughtfulness’. We like to think of it as the journey and development of a garment all the way from weaver to wearer.

We reserve the finest cloths, tweeds, wools and tartans for our bespoke service. A full set of measurements is taken for the individual pattern to be created for the order. All our bespoke orders are tailored and crafted in our onsite Edinburgh workroom by Stewart Christie's highly trained and experienced tailors & seamstresses. As one might imagine the process can take time, depending on the order. (Bespoke tailoring is after all the antithesis of disposable fast fashion). As a rough guide, we estimate approximately 8-12 weeks for the completion of an order, depending on the volume of work on at any one time, and the number of fittings/alterations required.

Bespoke is ideally suited to this discerning customer and for those who find difficulty in buying clothes off the peg for practical reasons but who appreciate the nuances of the perfect cut and fit. Bespoke tailoring addresses all body shapes and sizes.

Prices for garments created at our Edinburgh tailoring workroom start from £2,000 for a two-piece suit, £1,800 for a day jacket, and from £1,900 for a velvet smoking jacket or formal evening wear. We cater for the whole family and offer a travelling tailoring service across Scotland.

This service is provided with as many fittings as are required (classically three) and with expert advice and a very warm welcome throughout. Stewart Christie & Co. pride ourselves that you will be both properly dressed and to your satisfaction,  but without the superciliousness that is the bane of the tailor’s reputation.
