A Secret Dram

Tailoring with a Secret Dram

Nothing works together better than whisky and tweed, or rather a fine single malt and our bespoke tailoring. Both require time and knowledge to achieve complete perfection, along with an appreciation for the passion and the craftsmanship. At Stewart Christie & Co in recent years we have started the new tradition of offering our clients a ‘wee nip’ of uisge beatha. It is a very Scottish form of hospitality, which can also help on a few other levels, especially with shooting parties and the occasional nervous groom.

Whilst in lockdown we have been working on ways to refine and improve our store to enhance the customer experience, this has included an addition of a bespoke whisky cabinet discreetly hidden behind the main mirror in our refurbished gentleman’s fitting room.

This purpose built cabinet has been constructed from the same oak used for whisky casks and has ten individually lit positions to display and capture the colours within the bottles. Six crystal tumblers will ensure each dram is presented and tasted in the most refined fashion.

We launched our finely crafted cabinet this month, made by Fred Fearn with the notable whisky writer and friend Charlie Maclean.

The occasion was to celebrate the top ten outstanding whiskies selected by the connoisseur himself, we would like to thank all of these brands immensely, who have kindly graced our cabinet with such enthusiasm for the collaboration. What more would you possibly want from a fitting, than a good whisky and tweed. By appointment only.

Tailoring for: Royalty, Nobility and Gentry since 1720, serving a dram since 2015.

Charlie’s Top Ten List

Glenkinchie, Kingbarns, Ardnamurchan, Glen Scotia, Talisker, Dalwhinnie, Balvenie, Bowmore, Deanston, Dalmore

We affectionately refer to Glen Scotia as ‘whisky from the whiskiest place in the world’. For there was a time in Campbeltown, our home, when whisky virtually coursed through the streets, with a distillery on every corner. While the smallest of the whisky regions, once upon a time if you were drinking Scotch you were probably drinking Campbeltown… Today Glen Scotia is among the last of the many, and down the years all that knowledge, craft and whisky passion has been distilled into our classic Campbeltown malts. So when you pour a dram of Glen Scotia, you’re pouring a whisky made by history.

Glen Scotia 18 year old is a luxuriously smooth example of a classic Campbeltown single malt whisky, finished for 12 months in Oloroso sherry, which brings spicy and floral notes to the wonderful salted caramel character. Expect thick sweet toffee and citrus fruits, perfectly balanced with.

Bowmore 18 is a masterful combination of ripe fruit, dark chocolate and Islay smoke.

Cosseted away in the finest, hand-selected oak casks and allowed to mature at its own sedate pace, this is one of the most remarkable, perfectly balanced single malt scotch whiskies of its kind. One of Bowmore’s rarest whiskies, bottles of Bowmore 18-Year-Old may be limited, but there’s no end to its enjoyment.

Tasting notes

Colour: Mellow mahogany | Nose: Creamy caramel toffee, with ripe fruit and smoke aromas | Taste: Incredibly complex, with beautiful soft fruit and chocolate balanced with a light smokiness | Finish: The long and wonderfully balanced finish.

Deanston is an award-winning, entrepreneurial, and eco-conscious single malt whisky with a soft, sweet, honeyed character, Founded in the 60s, a highland single malt, handmade using local barley, harnessing soft water and hydro-power from the River Teith, matured in oak barrels, that rest for years in Deanston’s unique vaulted warehouse. Born in the 60s, we found a battered old cotton mill with high vaulted ceilings and saw a place perfect for whisky maturation. Located by the River Teith, we saw a river with water soft enough for whisky and the strength to power our distillery through hydropower. And we saw people, with the passion and honest work ethic to become true whisky makers. Not your average dram, because who wants to be average, Our commitment to turn the average and every day into something amazing. Making whisky that is always thought-provoking, versatile & exceptional – for people who get it.

The Ardnamurchan Single Malt, AD/01.21:01, comprises an equal proportion of peated and unpeated malt. The cask makeup is 65% ex bourbon barrels from Kentucky and 35% ex sherry casks, Oloroso and PX, from Jerez. A true reflection of our rugged Western Highland location, the whisky boasts notes of nutmeg, toffee apple, Crème brûlée, linseed, Seville oranges, cardamon, Manuka honey, nougat, saltwater and driftwood. There were 16,476 bottled worldwide and the label is blockchain enabled through QR code.

Glenkinchie 12 Bottling Note The flagship expression from the Glenkinchie distillery, one of the stalwarts of the Lowlands. A fantastic introduction to the region, Glenkinchie 12 Year Old shows off the characteristic lightness and grassy elements that Lowland whiskies are known for, with nods to cooked fruit and Sauternes wine along the way. Brilliant single malt to enjoy as an aperitif on a warm evening.

The Scottish Wemyss family have had a longstanding passion for malt whisky and their connections with the industry date back to the turn of the 19th century when John Haig (founder of Haig's) built his first distillery on Wemyss land. The Kingsbarn Dream to Dram is a light, delicate and fruity single malt whisky. Matured in the finest oak casks, under the supervision of the legendary whisky expert Jim Swan a carefully considered combination of 1st fill ex-Bourbon and 1st fill STR - that's Shaved, Toasted and Re-charred ex-Portuguese red wine casks- were used to mature our flagship whisky.

Talisker Skye was introduced in early 2015, named after the beautiful island on which the distillery resides. This expression brings with it a more well-rounded and sweet flavour profile packed with fresh citrus, sweet smoke, peppery spice and traditional Talisker maritime notes. It's matured in a combination of refill and toasted American oak casks, with a slightly higher proportion of toasted casks. Perfect for those who perhaps find the classic Talisker flavour profile a bit too much, not to say that Talisker fans won't enjoy it too. An easy-drinking taking the distillery's classically rugged character and softening it out, while maintaining the smoky and sweet notes the distillery is known for. More approachable, but still definitely Talisker.

The Dalwhinnie distillery sits at the heart of the majestic Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands. It is one of the highest Whisky producing distilleries in Scotland. Dalwhinnie 15yo is a good introduction to the delights of single malt whisky – elegant, smooth and medium-bodied, with a light, fruity palate and a whiff of heather on the finish. Part of Diageo's Classic Malt range.

Balvenie 21 Year Old Bottling Note Here we have the flagship single malt from Balvenie's series of Port Wood whiskies. This 21 year old expression, a marriage of rare Balvenie, was impressively finished in 30 year old port pipes. Originally released in 1996, this whisky is a veritable masterclass in poise and balance. It’s fruity and very subtly smoky, the perfect after-dinner dram.

For over 150 years, The Dalmore has set the standard in multi cask maturation. Hand selected casks, from the world's finest bodegas and wineries are expertly curated to create a sumptuous and layered whisky of legendary finesse. An outstanding single malt matured in American white oak ex-bourbon casks and finessed in rare and aged oloroso sherry casks.

— The Art of Tweed — Tweed is one of Scotland's great gifts to the world. Woven into every strand of this most authentic and rugged of cloths is an extraordinary heritage of innovation and creativity. The Art of Tweed explores the landscapes, textures and patterns of this glorious fabric. From the rolling hills of Scotland's country estates to the rhythmic clatter of looms in our last-surviving mills. From artisan weavers on the Isle of Harris to the high fashion of international catwalks and urban designers reimagining tweed for the streets. Here is a story of romance, nostalgia, sustainability and style - of an effortlessly versatile cloth and its unique place in our lives. Whether fashioned into a flat cap or tailored into a cape, the story of tweed is a story to be shared. Having explored Scotland's boldest fabric in The Secret Life of Tartan, Vixy shares here her love of tweed, mixing her streetstyle background with traditional techniques to give a cutting-edge twist to old ways. Tweed has had its share of ups and downs, but remains steadfast as the countryside's cloth of choice hard-working, purposeful and with an understated style of its own.
